The Cheapest Way to Stop Being Precious About Your Pots

The mold is not the shortcut you think it is — it is permission

Ceramic Arts Network made a quiet but useful argument in September: molds, long dismissed as an industrial process, are increasing in popularity among potters, and the reason has less to do with production than with psychology. Plaster mold making, as the magazine puts it, gives the potter freedom to experiment with form and surface because it takes away a bit of the preciousness of a one-of-a-kind wheel-thrown pot. That is the whole case in a sentence. A thrown pot carries the weight of the hour it took to make. A cast pot carries almost nothing, which is exactly why a maker will try the odd shoulder, the awkward spout, the surface treatment that might not work.

The studio detail bears this out. Linda Gates builds her jugs from a four-piece plaster mold for the body — two sides, a base, and a reservoir — plus a two-piece mold for the handle, and she does it partly because molds let her be creative with the forms and partly because they give her the smooth surface her digital decals need. The reservoir is the part worth stealing: designing one into the mold makes it easier to maintain an even rim thickness, because as the porous plaster pulls water from the slip, the excess is drawn down from the reservoir rather than leaving a thin, ragged edge. Her other tip is even simpler and applies to anyone casting more than one of anything: time the first cast and use that as your guideline for the rest. Thickness, in casting, is a stopwatch problem rather than a hand-skill problem.

That is the shift in thinking worth making this week. On the wheel, consistency lives in your hands. In a mold, consistency lives in a number you wrote down. Neither is better, but the second one frees attention for questions of design — proportion, profile, what a handle does to a silhouette — that are hard to think about clearly while also fighting a wobbling wall. Gates leaves the reservoir off after about twenty minutes, trims the rim, sponges it, and gives the rest of the mold another hour before disassembling. Nothing about that requires talent. It requires patience and a timer, which is a different resource than the one the wheel draws down.

This week's project: cast a mold from a glass bottle

Pick a bottle whose shape you actually like and make a three-part mold of it — two halves and a separate piece for the base. Exquisite Objects walks the whole sequence, and the useful thing about the tutorial is that it dwells on the steps beginners skip. Mark the cut line on the glass with a Chinagraph pencil, which wipes off cleanly. Roll a flat clay base and cut a circle leaving roughly three centimetres of space around the widest point of the bottle, so the finished mold has enough body to survive handling.

Three details decide whether this works. First, the bottle's opening needs a tapered clay stopper, both to keep plaster out of the bottle and because that stopper becomes the pour hole for your slip later — the negative space you will use for the rest of the mold's life. Second, the registration keys: press three holes with a coin, and set them in an uneven arrangement, so the halves can only be reassembled one way. Symmetry here is a trap. Third, before pouring the second half, brush a wash of clay and water over the exposed plaster surface and its edge, or the two halves will bond into one useless lump.

After that, it is mixing and waiting. Sift plaster into water until an island forms on the surface, let it slake for about two minutes, then mix thoroughly from the bottom outward. Half an hour to set, hot running water over the seam to help the parts release, a saw cut stopping about a centimetre short of the bottle, then wedges and gentle pressure. Chamfer the edges and let the mold dry for a few days. The making is an afternoon; the drying is the part people underestimate.

Tips and tricks: what went wrong, and one thing worth knowing

  • Cracks mean uneven drying

    Casting cracks usually trace back to drying speed or slip consistency rather than to the mold itself, so slow the dry before you blame the plaster.

  • Flimsy walls mean you drained too soon

    A cast that feels like a paper cup was simply left in the mold too briefly — longer casting time is the whole fix.

  • Sticking means the mold is still damp

    Pieces that refuse to release point to a mold that has not dried out; a release agent helps, but patience helps more.

  • You can throw a mold on the wheel

    For anyone who wants the two practices to talk to each other, molds can be made on the wheel itself — a fine option when you need a break from cranking out pots.

None of this will fix your walls

Molds do not teach hands anything. Even walls come from consistent pressure, wobble comes from poor centring, and the cure in both cases is repetition — set specific goals, master one technique at a time, and set aside dedicated time each week. Slip casting also has a higher learning curve for beginners and molds cost money, so a reader who trades practice for plaster may end up with neither a good cylinder nor a good cast.
