The moon jar cannot be thrown in one piece. It is two thrown hemispheres joined at the rim, which means the form has no exotic secret at its center — it has arithmetic. Two bowls that must match. Two sets of walls that must be even enough to hold a wide curve without help. A foot that must be trimmed true after the fact.

That is why the standard beginner progression is, unexpectedly, the whole recipe. Clay-King's five techniques run centering, opening, pulling, shaping, trimming, and each one builds on the last. Centering, they note, is what lets walls rise evenly rather than thickening in unpredictable spots — and in a two-part form, an off-center hemisphere is not just a wobbly bowl, it is a rim that will never meet its partner. Opening asks for a consistent floor thickness, slow and deliberate, because a thin floor cracks in trimming or firing. Pulling rewards several modest passes over one aggressive one. Shaping is where the same article says the smallest shift in pressure turns a straight cylinder into something "wide, generous" — which is the entire visual argument of a moon jar, made twice. Trimming, at leather-hard, cleans the foot and strengthens the bottom.

So the ambition here is not technical novelty. It is that a moon jar removes your ability to fudge. A mug forgives an uneven wall; the handle distracts the eye. A sphere assembled from two halves publishes every inconsistency at the seam. Read that as good news: nothing on the list above is a skill a home potter hasn't already been told to practice. The moon jar just gives a reason to actually practice it, and a piece at the end that looks like the reason.

One honesty note, because this newsletter would rather be useful than impressive: none of the sources consulted for this issue describes joining two hemispheres. The mechanics of the join — matching rim diameters, scoring and slipping, blending the seam — are extrapolation from general throwing practice, not instruction from a moon jar specialist. Treat the fundamentals as grounded and the assembly as an experiment you are running.

Tip: think of your hands as one tool, and know where that stops

Hilda Carr's most portable piece of advice is that the hands are one tool, not two — at every stage of throwing they should be touching in some way, even if it is only thumbs meeting above the rim while the fingers work inside. Hands that are physically connected can, as she puts it, talk to each other, which is precisely how two walls stay opposite each other and rise evenly. Her power tip is similarly specific: after coning, concentrate the force in the heel of one hand and imagine pushing an invisible line through the center of the ball, with the body behind it rather than the hand alone.

Then comes the sentence that matters most for this project. The tricky bit, she writes, arrives when the pot gets too tall for the hands to connect — at which point you slow down and reconnect as soon as you can near the top of the wall. That is the exact moment a deep hemisphere becomes a different craft than a cereal bowl. Expect it, and expect to work at half your usual pace when it arrives.

The project: two bowls, one jar, this week

Weigh your clay before you touch the wheel. Pottery Crafters recommends weighing out four to six balls at a time and bagging them so the last is as workable as the first — habit-forming for sets, and non-negotiable when the two halves of one object need to match. Wedge properly first; a large air bubble will keep throwing the clay off-center because air is lighter than clay.

Throw on bats. The same source's case for them is that you can lift a piece off the wheel without destroying its shape and without waiting for the clay to firm up — which is the difference between a wide, soft, freshly thrown hemisphere surviving the trip to the shelf and slumping on the way. Damp the bat with a squeezed-out sponge so the clay adheres; too wet and it slides, too dry and it comes loose.

Before you call either half done, check it. Push a needle tool through the base to the wheel, slide a finger down to the clay, and read the thickness off the tool — leave about half an inch if you plan to trim. Do that on both halves and compare. Two hemispheres of similar wall and floor thickness stand a chance of drying at the same rate and meeting at a seam. Two that differ will argue with each other for a week and then crack.

And choose forgiving clay. Pottery Crafters steers beginners toward stoneware or earthenware for their plasticity and away from porcelain, which absorbs water faster, weakens more quickly, and behaves elastically. Moon jars are traditionally porcelain. Yours, this week, should not be.

The case against attempting this at all

Soul Ceramics offers the cleanest counterargument to everything above: when starting out, do not try to create a brand new project every time. Perfect one part of the process — centering, pulling, compressing the base — and make consistent centering the fundamental you can repeat on demand. By that standard, a two-part sphere is exactly the wrong assignment.

The physics backs the caution. Clay that is too soft will not hold its shape, and the water added while throwing weakens it further, leading to collapse. Too much water and the walls go limp and stop supporting the structure. Wheel speed has to fall as the form rises — full speed to center, three-quarters to open, half to pull, slower still as the piece grows — and the hands must move slower than the wheel or the result comes out lopsided. Every one of those failure modes is amplified by a wide, curving wall.

So hold both ideas. Throw the halves as centering practice with a target attached. If the seam gives or the curve slumps, that is not a wasted week; it is a measurement of which fundamental is lagging, which is more than another mug would have told you.

The quiet authority of a moon jar comes from asymmetry. The two halves never quite match, and the seam is usually visible if you look for it. The question to carry to the wheel this week, then, is not whether you can throw one. It is whether you can leave the join where it landed and still call the piece finished.
