The week you stop throwing and start pouring

The plateau is a measurement problem

Most throwing plateaus get diagnosed as a hand problem, and most of them are not. The standard list of wheel troubles is remarkably consistent: collapsing walls from clay that is too wet or too thin, uneven thickness from inconsistent finger pressure, cracking from a base that was never compressed, warping in the kiln from uneven walls and rushed drying. Every one of those failures is a thickness or a drying failure. None of them is really about talent.

The trouble is that at the wheel, thickness is something you infer. You feel it between two fingers, you check it with a needle tool if you remember to, and you aim for a bottom of roughly a centimetre because that is the number someone told you. The wall itself stays a guess until the pot either survives the kiln or does not.

Slip casting removes the guess entirely. Pour casting slip into a dry plaster mold and the plaster pulls water out through capillary action, depositing clay against the mold wall. Leave a teacup or bowl for fifteen to twenty minutes and you get a wall of about an eighth of an inch — three millimetres — every time. Drain the excess, rest the mold upside down for twenty to forty minutes, demold at leather-hard, fettle the seams, dry to bone-dry over twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

Read that sequence next to the throwing troubleshooting list and the overlap is the point. Wall thickness: a timer. Drying: a stated window rather than a hope. Even walls: a property of the mold, not of your left hand. The casters even have a dial for the variable throwers argue about most — specific gravity between 1.75 and 1.80, where too much water means thin walls and slow casting and too little means thick walls and cracks.

A week of this does not replace throwing. It gives you a calibrated sample. Once you have held a three-millimetre wall that you did not make with your fingers, the cylinder you pull on Monday stops being a mystery and becomes a comparison.

This week: cast the form you already throw

Pick the shape you have thrown thirty times — the small bowl, the tumbler — and cast it instead. A pre-made plaster mold is the fast route; making your own from plaster of Paris is the deeper one, and it comes with a real safety bill, since plaster dust and clay silica are harmful to inhale and the work wants a respirator and ventilation.

The rest of the week is short. Confirm the mold is bone dry — if the surface feels cool or damp, it needs longer. Sieve the slip to the consistency of heavy cream, pour steadily to avoid air bubbles, tap the mold to release them, and top up as the plaster drinks. Then wait fifteen to twenty-five minutes and drain.

Do the same form twice, changing one variable. Cast one at fifteen minutes and one at twenty-five, then cut both in half after they are bone dry and look at the walls. That single comparison is worth more than another three hours of pulling cylinders, because it is the first time you will have seen the inside of a decision you make with your fingers every session.

Tips and tidbits: the older, stranger history

Slip casting is not a modern shortcut bolted onto a traditional craft. It reaches back to at least the Tang dynasty in China and was widely adopted in European production by 1745, when English potteries used it to turn out teacups and figurines at volume. The technique is older than most of the tools on your wheel table.

Nor is it hands-off. Mold-making is itself artistic work, many cast designs are assembled from several elements and refined by hand, and a good mold wears out after roughly fifty to eighty cycles — detail shortens that, simplicity extends it. A mold is a consumable, which reframes it as a sketch you can print rather than a permanent commitment.

The tidbit worth carrying: studios are now cutting 3D printing into the process, making masters and molds digitally before pouring clay into them the way potters did a thousand years ago.

Or maybe the problem is the surface

There is a plausible chance the plateau has nothing to do with thickness — that the forms are fine and the potter is simply bored of looking at them. If that is the case, a week of plaster fixes nothing that a week of sgraffito would not fix better, and sgraffito needs only colored slip, a leather-hard pot and a carving tool. Mishima inlays slip into cut lines, slip trailing raises designs with a squeeze bottle, and paper resist requires paper and scissors. All of it works on pots already sitting on your shelf.
