Week 5 Waivers: Rent the Job, Not the Box Score

Published October 6, 2026

Buy the month, not the moment

The Week 5 waiver wire is unusually easy to read, which is exactly why most managers will misread it. Saquon Barkley (hamstring), Ja'Marr Chase (concussion), Tee Higgins (adductor), DJ Moore (shoulder), Rashee Rice (hamstring) and Ladd McConkey (foot) all got hurt Sunday. Baker Mayfield's thumb is projected to cost him six to eight weeks. And the first byes of the season take Kansas City and Carolina off the board this week.

The temptation is to chase whoever posted the biggest Sunday line. The better filter is duration. A backup who can start for a month is worth more than a one-week box-score spike, and this is the one week of the season where the difference is priced wrong, because thin rosters bid on points instead of on games covered.

Will Shipley is the cleanest version of that trade. He ran six times for 23 yards after Barkley went down and was the only healthy back on Philadelphia's active roster once Tank Bigsby left. With Bigsby on injured reserve, Shipley leads the backfield outright, and he has historically been the more passing-down back of the two. Eight dollars of a hundred is a rounding error against a starting running back job in a good offense.

Emanuel Wilson costs a little less and asks a little more faith. He made his first start with Jadarian Price on IR and scored twice against the Chargers — a 23-yard slip screen and an 8-yard run — on 21 carries and three catches. George Holani got seven touches total. Six dollars for that is not a gamble; it is a toll.

The honest caveat is baked into both. Shipley's value evaporates the instant Barkley practices in full, and Seattle has already signed Joe Mixon while Zach Charbonnet is eligible to come off PUP. Wilson's workload may be a two-week lease rather than a month. Bid for the games you actually need covered — the Chiefs and Panthers bye, plus the current infirmary — and not for a December role you are inventing.

The Big Lead

He also took 36 of the 60 running back snaps — this is what an actual job looks like, as opposed to a good afternoon.

Your bids have three deadlines, not one

Waivers clear before Thursday night, and this week the schedule does more damage than usual. Tampa Bay at Dallas kicks off Thursday, so those players lock first. Then the Eagles and Jaguars play in London at 9:30 a.m. ET Sunday — meaning Shipley is unavailable to you by breakfast, before the first injury report of the morning has settled.

The one gift is Monday night. Buffalo visits the Rams, which buys an extra day of information on DJ Moore's shoulder if you need a late flex. Everything else wants a decision made early.

If the bye left you without a quarterback, C.J. Stroud is the streamer with the best underlying case: 347 yards and two scores against Dallas with Nico Collins back, five touchdowns and no interceptions on the season, and an offense that cannot run the ball and knows it. Houston is 0-4 and plays a 0-4 Tennessee team. Volume does not care about records.

What a real inherited job looks like

Kyle Monangai ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Chicago's 23-12 win over the Jets, with Tyson Bagent filling in for Caleb Williams. The Bears held the ball 42 minutes and ran 89 plays to New York's 32. That is not a backup getting a window — that is a back whose job simply is his, in an offense that may not give the ball back. Chicago visits Green Bay next.
